EDITORIAL: Call to arms! Time to aid our county schools

This is a call to arms.
Halfway through the contest to win $100,000 for our schools, no strings attached, Enterprise has fallen out of the Top 10, meaning we won’t get the cash unless there’s a concerted drive to get out the “vote.”

In a county of 6,700 – and one that shows tremendous support for our schools – one would think it would be easy to round up the votes to be in first place.
The current first-place school has slightly more than 2,000 votes.
But we don’t have to be the top community. Anywhere in the Top 10 will win us the hundred grand to be split among the county’s schools.
The competition is half over. Plenty of time remains to pull ourselves back in the running before the Jan. 15 deadline.
Last week, the Chieftain challenged all other businesses to match our 100 percent employee participation. That challenge still is open, and today we challenge all service clubs, fraternal organizations, nonprofits and other community-minded groups to follow suit.
We also expect something that hasn’t happened yet so far as we know: every public school sending a note home with every student urging family members to vote.

The process takes just a few minutes and there’s nothing to buy. Staffers at the U.S. Cellular store on Main Street in Enterprise will show how it’s done.
Please take advantage of the cellular company’s generosity when you are next in downtown Enterprise.
It’s the least we can do for the county’s kids.
