A comeback by Joseph High School boys fell short in their 55-46 loss to local rival Imbler High Thursday night in the first round of the Old Oregon League’s basketball tournament in Baker City.
The Panthers avenged the Eagles’ victory Jan. 30 in Imbler. Joseph’s playoff setback ended its season with an overall record at 5-15.
The Eagles battled from behind throughout the fourth quarter. After halftime,Imbler scored 13 straight points for a 34-26 lead. The Panthers managed to stay in front the rest of the night. Joseph senior Tavin Hurley threw down a ferocious one-handed slam as the third quarter buzzer sounded. He banked a lay-up in the fourth quarter while drawing a foul and converted the bonus free-throw to pull within 34-31. Later, Hurley and teammate Erik Steen combined for three straight baskets and a 45-41 margin. But each time, turnovers eventually spoiled the Eagles’ effort and allowed the Panthers to escape victorious.
