The Cougars became the spoilers’ latest victim.

A week after Wallowa High School boys advanced to the top of the basketball league, they suffered a letdown. Cove High’s Leopards – which had upset Imbler when the Panthers held first place and started them on a four-game losing slide – came to Wallowa Feb. 7 and defeated the Cougars, 62-46. The loss snapped Wallowa’s six-game winning streak, extended the previous day at Halfway in a 59-31 decision over Pine Eagle High.

The Cougars finished the weekend tied with the Leopards for second place. Both team hold a 6-3 record in the competitive Old Oregon League.

Over the weekend, junior point guard Tyler Harshfield led Wallowa (13-5 overall) in scoring. He averaged 15.5 points per game. Senior Andrew Wilson did most of his damage (17 points combined) from long distance. He totaled five three-point baskets. Sophomore Ronald Gladden tallied 7.5 points per game, junior Mark Jamerson 6.5, senior Casey King 6.0 and junior Chance Waters 5.0. Waters made a three each night. Also, senior G.T. McKenzie managed four points at Pine Eagle while senior Brennon Evans sank a three.

The Cougars will finish their regular season Feb. 13 at Joseph High School.
