The Oregon Attorney General’s Office is reviewing one or more charges against former Wallowa School Superintendent Marc Theilman, and a decision as to whether to move forward with disciplinary action is expected by next week, according to Melody Hansen, executive assistant to the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.
TSPC reported in May that Thielman was facing at least one unspecified charge, but would not release any information on the nature of the charges until after the attorney general reviewed the reports.
If TSPC chooses to make a charge, Thielman has 21 days from the time that charge is mailed to request a hearing before an administrative law judge with the Office of Administrative Hearings.
TSPC has the authority to revoke or suspend an educator’s license, place him/her on probation, or issue a public reprimand. If an educator refuses to respond to the charges, he/she will automatically lose his/her teaching license.
Wallowa County residents were aware that Thielman had exited the Wallowa School District under a cloud, but the Wallowa School Board did not give any explanation of the issues leading to his exit.
In February, Thielman told the district he would resign as superintendent; the Wallowa School Board placed him on administrative leave in April; and TSPC reported the pending charge or charges against him the following month.
