Hungry for fresh local produce? You’ll be happy to know the Wallowa County Community Farmers Market will hold the first market of the season Thursday, June 5, in Enterprise.

The market will be held twice a week – once in Enteprise and once in Joseph

Enterprise will host themarket on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the Courthouse lawn.

Joseph will host the market on Saturdays beginning June 7. Joseph’s Farmers Market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Main Street in front of ToZion.

Enterprise Thursday markets will take place in conjunction with the Courthouse Concert Series, sponsored by the Music Alliance beginnng with the very first Market. Further entertainment is planned that evening as residents walk over to the OK Theatre at 7 p.m. for the free local debut of two videos: “Wallowa County, It’s a Way of Living” and “Hells Canyon Scenic Byway.” A live perfromance by Henry Kinsley, featuring the video theme songs, will follow the video show.

Even then the fun doesn’t stop. Several local restaurants will remain open after the show for that late supper, dessert or cocktail.

Joseph shoppers will also enjoy entertainments in conjunction with their farmers market this year, with the June 7 opener featuring a performance by “Rich and Trilby’s Farmers Market Music.”

Community events will continue in Joseph on the first Saturday of each month, including live music, recipe contests, cooking demonstrations and wine tasting. For information on upcoming market events and the weekly produce report listen for the “Jolly Green Grower” on local KWVR radio.

During June, the market will have fresh salad greens, fresh baked bread, free-range eggs, and grassfed beef. Local gardeners can pick up plant starts, including tomato, eggplant, pepper, lettuce and basil. As the season progresses, the market will offer a wide variety of produce. Past years have included melons, cherries, raspberries and peaches, as well as tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, cucumbers, squash and fresh cut flowers.

Pam Frolander of Enterprise visited the market almost every week last year and can tell you what to expect.

“The fresh produce is so flavorful and I’ve learned cooking tips from the vendors,” Frolander said. ” It has always been important to me to support local growers and the local economy. The market gives me a fun place to do just that.”

Vendors who would like to sell their produce, meat, or other locally grown products are welcome. The markets accept WIC Farmers Market coupons and are working on accepting EBT food cards.  Interested vendors or those with other questions should contact Beth Gibans at 432-0930.
