Cpl. Jessica A. Ellis, 24, of Bend, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad May 11, arrived at the Baker City Airport with full military honors on Sunday, May 18, in a private family ceremony.
She is the daughter of Wallowa-Whitman National Forest Supervisor Steve Ellis and his wife, Linda, a nurse practitioner, who live in Baker City.
Ellis is the second Oregon woman to be killed in the Iraqi war. She was a U.S. Army combat medic on her second tour of duty in Iraq.
She graduated from Lakeview High School in 2002 and attended Central Oregon Community College in Bend, before entering the Army. She was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.
Ellis was the middle of three children and is survived by her brother, Cameron Ellis and his wife Irena of San Francisco, Calif., and her sister, Mandy Ellis of Corvallis.
Memorial services will be held at St. Francis De Sales Cathedral at 2235 First Street in Baker City at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22.
In lieu of flowers, the Ellis family has established a memorial fund with the Fisher House Foundation in honor of Jessica.
The foundation provides houses for military families to stay near where their loved ones are hospitalized.
