For Enterprise High School track and field, junior Tricia O’Leary flew 16 feet, 2 inches to become the state champ in Class 2A girls’ long jump.
O’Leary’s triumphant stood out May 16, while most of the other Wallowa County athletes enjoyed success on the first day of the meet at Western Oregon University. A few field events finished for the season. Enterprise freshman Matt Perren ended up eighth in the boys’ pole vault. Joseph High School senior Megan Yost was second in the Class 1A girls’ javelin. Classmate Chris Harshman took third in the pole vault. Ben Garnett was sixth in the shot put.
Preliminary track races filled the rest of the day, with the finals set for May 17. Wallowa senior Brandon Mahon will run in the Class 1A boys’ 100-meter sprint. Classmate Mallory Turner advanced to the finals of the girls’ 400. Joseph senior Colby Patton is in contention for medals in both the high and low hurdles after winning both her heats the first day. In a busy day, she will also participate in both the 400- and 1600-meter relays as the Joseph girls qualified for the finals in both. Both of the Joseph boys’ relays also advanced.
For Enterprise, both the girls’ long relay and the boys earned spots in the finals. In the preliminaries, the girls set a new season-best, beating the previous by five seconds. Also, senior Kayla Foster will run in the girls’ 400 while junior Dusty McAuliffe is in the boys’ 400.
The second day of competition also features different events. Wallowa junior Price Both runs the 1500-meter race, while Natalie Millar – district champion in the girls’ 1500 – looks to take the state medal. Enterprise sophomore Joscelyn Stangel is in the girls’ 800; junior Patrick Baird in the boys’ 800. In the field for Enterprise, senior Jacob Lynn throws the discus, sophomore Jacob Girtz the javelin. Perren tries the high jump, and O’Leary goes for gold in the triple jump. Joseph has Clancy Warnock in the javelin for Joseph, Garnett in the discus and Devin Patton in the high jump.
