With two wins over Pine Eagle High School, Wallowa High softball enjoyed satisfying results on an otherwise grueling May 3.
Freshman Kuulei Delatori starred in the pitcher’s circle. She threw all the first game – Wallowa’s 14-7 victory – and most of the second, as the Lady Cougars closed the day with a 13-4 win.

Wallowa played well; the problems were out of the players’ control. With umpires confused over scheduling, games were delayed for hours. Athletic director Warren Wilson eventually phoned John Tucker, who was already working two games in Elgin including a 10-inning affair. By day’s end, Tucker had umpired four games in one day for the first time in his five years. Wallowa and Pine Eagle teams were ready to play at noon, but waited until 3:48 p.m. for the first pitch.
Once the games were underway, the Cougars walloped the Spartans. Senior Brittany Mayton and junior Ayesha Wortman both hit home runs. Freshman McKenzie Shelton and Delatori tripled. Delatori also smacked a pair of doubles.
Four days later, Wallowa hosted Pine Eagle again in a district playoff. It was scheduled too late to be included in this edition of the Chieftan.
