The Wallowa-Whitman Mountain Office of the U.S. Forest Service is proposing to sell the Wallowa Compound, 606 West First Street in Wallowa.

According to Laura Livingston, realty specialist for Blue Mountain land zone which covers Malhuer, Umatilla and Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, the 1.5 acre site has been been used for storage since the early 90’s and is considered excess to the needs of the service.

The compound, which includes two houses, a warehouse and garage and a gas house, has been used for storage purposes since the forest districts were combined in the early 90’s.

“They basically moved everyone to Enterprise,” Livingston said. “There were some efforts to transfer the property to the city of Wallowa, but those fell through. Currently we don’t have the authority to offer it, so we are looking at asking for market value.”

Market value for the compound, which is on city services, has not yet been determined but eight parties have expressed an interest in purchasing the property once it has been, Livingston said.

Members of the public may comment on the proposed sale or ask about purchase by contacting Livingston at Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, PO. Box 907, Baker City, Or 97814 or by calling (541) 523-1230 or via email at (Livingston@fs.fed.us).
