Dramatic loss tough to take

Just one out away from wrapping up their second victory of the baseball season, the Eagles collapsed and never recovered.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Joseph High School held a three-run lead April 5 against Potlatch High of Idaho. But the Loggers loaded the bases. Then with two outs, they cleared the sacks with a shot to the gap in left-center field. “We had a mental letdown,” Joseph coach Tony Gross said.

The Loggers tacked on another three runs in the extra inning for an 8-5 victory.

Disappointment needed some time to wear off, but the Eagles (1-7) had to come back minutes later for the second game. Potlatch pounded Joseph pitchers, 15-4. The game ended after six innings by the mercy rule.

Union High School is the next foe, with an April 11 doubleheader at Daggett Field in Joseph.
