100 YEARS AGOMarch 19, 1908

Owing to the frightful conditions of the roads between here and Elgin, the Joseph and Elgin Stage Company have been obligated to suspend passenger traffic on their line for a few days until the roads get in better shape. The stage company has been using six horses on a light wagon at the other end of the line for some time and then is able to get across Cricket Flat only by undergoing many hardships and risk.

The dance given by the Enterprise Band at the Opera House Tuesday evening in honor of St. Patrick proved to be one of the greatest social events of the season. A good crowd was present and tripped the light fantastic until 2 a.m. to the music of Enterprise Orchestra

PARADISE – Rainy weather, snow disappearing fast. … Chicken thieves visited the hen house of William Howell a few days ago and took four chickens and two turkeys.

70 YEARS AGOMarch 24, 1938

Taxpaying has again become a habit in Wallowa County. Money has poured into the office of Sheriff A.B. Miller at such a rate this month that Deputy J.A. Bronson wrote a check for $100,000 this week to Treasurer Ella T. Clayton. It is believed this is the largest check ever written on a local bank.

WALLOWA – Finances of the Wallowa school district will be placed in a still better position when the board finishes readjustments now made. … (Available) funds will enable the board to pay off all the bonds and to take up some of the old warrants, leaving a net debt of $30,000. The debt has been cut in half in a few years.

A large and modern school house will be built this spring by Pratt district on Lower Prairie creek, carrying out plans originated last summer.

As part of a national movement, a branch of the Wild Life Federation was formed in Enterprise. … They explained its aim is to help conserve everything of natural beauty in the country in their native state – flowers, trees, lakes, parks, rivers, mountains, fish and game.

50 YEARS AGOMarch 20, 1958

Melvin Pace, an Enterprise livestock and grain farmer, was named Wallowa County Outstanding Young Farmer for 1957. The award was presented last Saturday by John Kiesow, chairman of the Wallowa County Jaycees contest, at the agricultural planning conference at the courthouse.

The Enterprise FFA parliamentary team and their advisor, Max Smith, left yesterday for Bend, where the boys are competing for the state championship. Members of the team are Eldon Foster, Keith Simmons, David Snodderly, John Hays, Norman Pratt and Jerry Justice. Justice will also represent the chapter in public speaking.

LOSTINE – The Lostine Garden Club met Tuesday, March 18, at the home of Barbara Caudle, with Ethel Tanzey co-hostess. Clara Bennett presented a program, “Waking Up Our Garden,” and Violet Reavis spoke on “Lilies.”

TROY – Fishermen by the dozens have been in. It is reported that 15 steelhead were caught.
