Weeks after the state girls’ basketball championship, Lena Moro was one of the best track and field athletes at the March 14 Umatilla Icebreaker.

The Joseph High School senior finished with high rankings in each of her four events. She won the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.2 seconds, a half-second ahead of teammate Amber Shear. Sprinting the 400 in a minute, six seconds, Moro was the runner-up. She also took second in the long jump, going 15 feet, 10 inches. Her time of 14.12 seconds in the 100-meter sprint earned fourth place, a hair ahead of Shear.

Meanwhile, Joseph boys won a pair of events. Senior Chris Harshman medalled in pole vault by reaching 12 feet. Junior Clancy Warnock hurled the javelin 166 feet, 8 inches for first place.

Senior Ben Garnett took second place in the discus with 118 feet, and fourth in the shot put (41-5 1/2). Junior Kenny Lathrop ran the 400 in 56 seconds for third place.

The Eagles return to action March 21 for the Dick Horyna Invitational at Stanfield.
