The local Elks Lodge will award $1,000 scholarships to two area students who could win $60,000 should they be selected “Most Valuable Student” by the Elks National Foundation.

Scholarship Chairman Chuck Haines said any student who is a U.S. citizen and in the graduating class of a school within the jurisdiction of a local Elks Lodge can apply. One boy and one girl will be selected, he said.

Students will be judged on leadership, scholarship and financial need.

Local winners will compete Feb. 2 in the Northeast district contest at the Hermiston Elks Lodge.

Winners of the district receive $1,600; second place $1,400 and third place $1,200. The first-place district winners next compete at the state level where awards range from $2,200 to $1,000.

District winners will also be entered in the national competition.

The deadline for completing the application is Jan. 11, 2008. Forms are available from school guidance counselors or can be downloaded from www.elks.org. More information is available from Haines at 426-3729.
