The Enterprise girls basketball team was brave in battle, but its arrows were woefully crooked Friday night at Enterprise as Union pulled out a 56-36 victory at Quinn Court.

The Bobcats (10-2 overall, 1-0 Wapiti League) used crisp passing to set up consistent easy baskets down low throughout the contest and smothering defense to force Enterprise (5-7, 0-2) into 26 turnovers.

Leading the way, Union freshman guard Devyn Christensen scord 19 points and grabbed seven steals.

Christensen hit six field goals in the second half, all of which were layups, pacing UHS to outscore Enterprise 27-21 in the final two quarters.

Dueling in a ruggedly physical fray, the Bobcats jumped out to a 12-9 lead, which later stretched to 29-15 when Union had three consecutive steals, which led to layups within a 20-second time span with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter.

The Outlaws had no response for Union’s tough defense and efficient offense and only able to two field goals and made two of five attempts from the free throw line in the quarter.

The Bobcats opened the third period with a 10-2 run and continued its lights out shooting, hitting two three-pointers and scoring 16 points, which sealed Enterprise’s fate.

Union had 13 steals in the game and the combination of Christensen and junior guard Jennifer Brotherton proved too strong, as the two scored 31 of UHS’s 56 points.

Julie Vernarsky led the Outlaws with eight points, while Madi Smith added six steals and two assists.

The Outlaws continue Wapiti League action on Friday as it hosts Nyssa (8-3, 2-0), with varsity action starting at approximately 6 p.m.

Cold-shooting Outlaws stumble at Vale

For the first half of Saturday afternoon’s Wapiti League girls basketball showdown, Enterprise couldn’t shake out of a horrendous shooting slump.

By the time the Outlaws found any type of rhythm in the second half, it was too late. Vale held on for a 39-21 win in both teams’ second league game of the season.

EHS finished nine of 34 from the field, including three of 12 from the free throw line.

Leading scorers Sara Freels and Julie Butterfield went a combined seven of 18 from the field and two of six from the charity stripe.

Because of poor shooting, the Outlaws (5-7, 0-2) fell behind 12-6 late in the first quarter. Heading into halftime, the Vikings extended the lead to 15 points and showed no signs of slowing down.

In the second half, EHS had a chance to tighten the score, but couldn’t connect from the free throw line, missing seven of 10 attempts.

Sara Freels led Enterprise with 10 points. Julie Butterfield pulled down 13 rebounds and added six points.

In a close matchup, the EHS junior varsity edged Union 37-34 on Friday. Leading the way was freshman Kayla Foster with 10 points. Christina Montgomery added seven points.
