The Northridge earthquake in 1994. It was about 5:30 a.m. and the house started shaking. I ran out, and then ran back in… My deer heads were falling off the wall. There was quite a bit of damage.

Probably the Columbus Day storm when I was in high school. My dad worked for the power company, and we didn’t see him for two weeks. We had no electricity and we had to moved into the basement where there was a wood stove.

I’ve been in some big forest fires. I remember one that was 23,000 acres in 1950 in New Mexico. It started on the plains of St. Magdalena and spread into the Gila National Forest. … At one point we were surrounded by a big ring of fire. It was kind of eerie.

There was a big thunder and lightning storm, with a lot of rain, when I was 17 years old, alone at our ranch out of Flora. It was very dark, and it started dropping baseball-sized hail. The lightning lit up the sky. I was scared.
