100 YEARS AGOAug. 17, 1905

Mr. Theo. Scheur, supervisor of the Great Northern mine, was in Joseph Tuesday and states that he is convinced that he has uncovered an 18-inch vein of very rich ore. Prominent mining men estimate the find to be between $200 and $300 to the ton in copper, besides carrying good values in silver. – Joseph Herald.

PARADISE – A couple of millionaires came into Paradise and bought 80 acres of land and about 40 head of cattle.

70 YEARS AGOAug. 15, 1935

On the first Sunday in August caravans of motor cars filled with huckleberry pickers may have been seen going in every direction along the network of scenic forest roads of the county. No pirate of old ever showed more zeal in finding treasure than does the average housewife seeking the perfect patch of huckleberries.

Del Arnold, arrested Saturday night at Imnaha, charged with attack with a deadly weapon, appeared before Judge J.W. Knowles in circuit court Monday. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years in prison. He said he had been drinking and did not remember what he did.

TROY – While riding for beef cattle on upper Powwatka Thursday, Howard Harvey’s horse tripped and went over a rim. Mr. Harvey was thrown and escaped with a bad cut on the side of the head and bruises, but the horse was killed.

50 YEARS AGOAug. 18, 1955

Television pictures will be shown in Enterprise at all commercial outlets on Sept. 9, it was announced yesterday by Lee Stoner of Eastern Oregon Television Inc. On that date the public will be invited to visit the various places where pictures will be shown to inspect the quality of the product and get acquainted with the procedure for installation of home sets.

Superintendent Perry Price of the Wallowa school system announced this week that the Wallowa schools are short four teachers. Departments still remaining to be filled are commercial, music, home economics, physical education and fifth grade.

25 YEARS AGOAug. 21, 1980

FFA and 4-H members left the Wallowa County Fair after their fat stock auction last Thursday night $48,326 richer. That dollar figure was the amount paid for a total of 101 animals sold at the auction and broke last year’s record of $40,200.
