Concert, songwriting workshop set Aug. 20

Opie, an indy-rock band based in Portland with Joseph roots, will perform a concert at the skating rink at Wallowa Lake on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 8 p.m. in memory of Bryn Lunde.

Lunde’s family designated Fishtrap as a recipient of memorial gifts, and Fishtrap is using them to promote writing, songwriting and music by and for young people in Bryn’s name. There will be refreshments, but no alcohol. Local band “Chase” will open for Opie.

The whole thing will be preceded by a songwriting workshop from 2 to 3 p.m., with Opie’s lead songwriter, Will Lathrop.

The workshop will be held at Fishtrap’s Coffin House. For workshop or concert information, contact Rich Wandschneider at Fishtrap at 426-3623 or rich@fishtrap.org.

The original band members – Michael Vlietstra, Joe Williamson, and Wayne and Will Lathrop – are all Joseph High School graduates.

They first formed Opie, originally named Birdhouse, in January of 2002. Drummer Williamson was succeeded by Jerry Noble, a Portland newcomer from New Mexico, last year.

The band has met with considerable success in its short history, most recently releasing a new EP titled “It’s a Wonderful Life,” which was rated as a Top 5 Northwest release by KPSU radio, and rated as the No. 4 Northwest release by Ranch Records.
