Forty-eight people gathered at Enterprise City Park Saturday for the annual Alder Slope Run/Walk, held in conjunction with the Enterprise Summerfest celebration.

The number of participants was down from previous years and the majority of runners and walkers were local, partly because the Riverfest Run is now held in Union County the same day.

However, individual runners came from as far away as Barrow, Alaska, and Richmond, Va., and some categories were still competitive. The field was dotted with siblings, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives and other combinations that made the event a family affair.

First across the finish line were three runners in the 5K runners division with the same last name. Michael Swart, 18, of Joseph, was first with a time of 19:34, and was trailed by twin cousins Tony and Craig Swart, 17, of Enterprise, who posted times of 21:03 and 21:58, respectively. Michael Swart is a star cross country runner for the Enterprise High School cross country team, while all three are on the varsity EHS track team.

Among other notable finishers was Lynne Sampson, 38, Joseph, in the 5K running division, the first woman across the line in 27:40; and Travis Dixon, 18, of La Grande, who completed the grueling 10K run in 42.12.

There were eight runners over 60 years of age, with Herbert Ovestrud, 76, of Enterprise, the most senior runner. He was the first (and only) runner in the 60 and over to finish the 10K run course, logging a time of 1:31:30.
