Merritt Louis Holloway, 86, of Live Oak, Calif., died at home March 7, 2004. He was born in Flora on August 4, 1917.
After ranching in northeast Oregon, Mr. Holloway moved to Nevada in 1946 where he buckarooed on several ranches in Nevada and California. In 1952, he and his wife Winona ran the packing operation and trading post at Rainbow Lodge, Ariz., conducting pack trips to Rainbow Bridge and the Colorado River before the completion of the Glen Canyon Dam. After working as a loan officer, he served as ranch manager and business manager for Deep Spring College in California before ill health forced his retirement in 1980. He enjoyed horseback riding and became an avid leatherworker and collector of western memorabilia when he was no longer able to ride.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Winona Johnson Holloway; sons Tipton of Live Oak, Calif., Ted of Wellington, Nev. and Tom of Vacaville, Calif.; a daughter, Winona Joann Holloway of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters Gertrude Budd of College Place, Wash., Mable Kling of Clarkston, Wash., Genevieve Robinson of Walla Walla, Wash., Joan Edwards of Spokane, Wash. and Charlotte Gooding of Hermiston; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members. He was preceded in death by sisters Lola Sandstrum of Beaverton and Mary Howerton of Clarkston, Wash.; and brothers Halsey Holloway of Beatty, Nev., Marvin Holloway of Clarkston, Wash., Lowell Holloway of Sacramento, Calif., and Roy Holloway of Waycross, Ga.
A memorial service was held in Gridley, Calif.
