Keith L. Matheny, 64, of Asotin, Wash., was the victim of a fatal one-vehicle accident last Saturday afternoon, Jan. 10, near Troy. Matheny was pronounced dead at the scene after his 1998 Dodge Ram pickup plunged off the Grande Ronde Road at the Horseshoe Bend landmark eight miles down river from Troy in Washington state.

The Washington State Police, which investigated the accident, reported that the pickup went over a 70 foot embankment and ended in the Grande Ronde River. The weather was described as overcast at 1 p.m. when the accident occurred, with the roadway dry.

Matheny was alone in the vehicle.

This marked the second accident at Horseshoe Bend since Christmas. Involved in the first wreck there Dec. 27 or Dec. 28 were Mel and Berta Hokanson of Troy and Mel Hokanson’s mother. The Hokansons are now out of the hospital while the elderly mother is still in the hospital with broken ribs.

The spot where the accidents occurred is the only stretch of the Grande Ronde Road on the Washington side that is not paved.
