Scott Keogh from Alberta, Canada wows the crowd on Sunday afternoon with a 70 point ride.

Rodeo fans had a full weekend of top notch action at the 58th Annual Chief Joseph Days Rodeo. Rodeo athletes from across the country and quality stock from Growney Brothers thrilled rodeo faithful over the four day event. Participants competed for prize money in excess of $71,000.

Shane Erickson from Yelm, Wash., won the “All Around Cowboy” title and $3,728.66 as top money winner at CJD. He also received a Navajo Blanket from Lamb Trading Company of Joseph and a set of silver spurs crafted by Larry Bacon from Lost Prairie. Erickson competed in two rounds of calf roping finishing second and third. He also had a second place finish with teammate Will Schmidt from Benton City, Wash. in the team roping. Erickson is currently ranked number one “All Around” on the Columbia River Circuit.

Kyle Joslin from Caldwell, Idaho, gyrated to an 86 point, first place finish on his bull Lap Dance Friday night to win the always popular bull riding competition. Joslin received $2,255.25 for his efforts.

Bareback rider Cody Jessie from Prineville earned $1,929.33 for his first place, 81 point ride on Lolly Pop. Jessie is currently ranked seventh on the CRC.

“Lucky Lady” was lucky for Shawn Morehead from of Corrine, Utah. A 78 point saddle bronc ride garnered Morehead a $1,908.96 win.

Barrel racer Kelly Kaminski of Bellville, TX captured the course in theHarley Tucker Arena, riding her way to $1,723.68 and a first place victory with a time of 17.25 seconds. She also won the fast time award of $100 from Turner Excavating.

Sean Mulligan fromValentine, Neb. scored an average of 9.1 seconds on his first and second go times to win the steer wrestling and $1,176.77.

Jason Diedrich from Stephenville, Texas came away as the first recipient of the “Wildest Ride Contest”. The contest was originated to honor J. Shirly Bothum, 1964 CJD Saddlebronc Champion, rodeo chute boss and sculptor, who passed away last year. Diedrich received a bronze relief likeness of Shirly on the famous bronc “War Paint” depicted at the Pendleton Round-Up. The bronze was sculpted and donated by Steve Parks and his wife, Cindy of Parks Bronze in Enterprise. Diedrich also received $300 and a one of a kind belt buckle courtesy of Frontier Trophy Buckles.

Barrel racer Cindy Woods from Newburg won the Harley Tucker Rodeo Series Award . Woods is the Number one ranked barrel racer on the Columbia River circuit. The Harley Tucker Rodeo Series Award, formally known as the Harley Tucker Memorial Award, was first started in 1970. Recognized at the performance with a plaque and $1450, this award goes to the cowboy scoring the most points in a combination of the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show in Union, The St. Paul Rodeo in St. Paul, The Elgin Stampede in Elgin and Chief Joseph Days in Joseph. If the award is earned three times, the contestant receives an accumulating purse that now stands at $9000. Craig and Kay Breseth of Mountain West Storage in LaGrande have added $1500 toward the series in recent

years as its major sponsor. All four rodeos also contribute $350 each yearly to the growing prize. In 1992, Butch Knowles of Heppner became the first three-time winner and earned $5100. In 1990, Rocky Steagall of Irrigon became the second three-time winner and received $3100. Cowgirls became eligible to win the Harley Tucker Rodeo Series Award in 2002. This was due to women’s barrel racing, as well as team roping, being added to the list of qualifying events.
