Vivian Hovis

Vivian Emmons Hovis, 94, of LaGrande but formerly of Coos Bay and Joseph, died Nov. 25, 2002, at a local care facility in LaGrande. She was born June 26, 1907, to Leonard Burton and Bertha Wright Emmons in Joseph.

Mrs. Hovis attended Hurricane Creek Grade School and Joseph High School before marrying Earl Hovis in 1924. The Hovis’ ran a dairy farm locally for many years before selling out. After Earl retired, the couple moved to Coos Bay. She was known as an excellent cook and master gardener.

Mrs. Hovis is survived by a son, Robert Hovis of San Francisco, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Santoes of LaGrande; a daughter-in-law, Marjorie Black of Enterprise; two grandchildren, Lois Darlene Kaping of Wilsonville and Marjorie Helen Ross of Battleground, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; a son, Ivan “Butch” Hovis; her brothers and their wives, Lester and Eva Emmons, Earl and Elsie Emmons, Milford “Murf” and Janet Emmons, and an unnamed infant brother; a sister, Elnora Davies; a sister and her husband, Macel and Floyd Reese; and three nephews, Gordon “Butch” Hensley, George William “Billy” Emmons and Edwin Emmons.

Funeral arrangements are pending and are being handled by Loveland Funeral Chapel of LaGrande.
