The Eastern Oregon University Fiddle Ensemble and John Reischman and the Jaybirds will be appearing in concert on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the La Grande United Methodist Church, located at 1612 Fourth Ave.
The Fiddle Ensemble will perform a number of tunes in a variety of musical styles as they open the evening’s concert, which will feature John Rieschman and the Jaybirds, a west coast acoustic band performing primarily traditional and original Bluegrass music.
Advance tickets are available at Betty’s Books and Marilyn’s Music Plus in Baker City, and La Grande Stereo and Music, Sunflower Books, and Joe and Sugar’s in La Grande.
Tickets will also be available at the door.
Reischman, presently living in Vancouver, B.C., is one of the top-ranked contemporary mandolin players in the world, mastering many musical styles on the instrument, ranging from Bluegrass to jazz to hot swing to Latin and beyond. He has been featured as a guest artist on recordings by such artists as Grammy winner Todd Phillips and nominee Kate MacKenzie. He first gained national recognition in the early 1980s as a member of the Tony Rice Unit, which played everything from Gordon Lightfoot to Django Reinhardt.
Joining Reischman in the Jaybirds are four West Coast acoustic players renowned in their own right: Jim Nunally, guitarist, vocalist, composer and producer from the San Francisco Bay area; Chilliwack, British Collumbia’s Trisha Gagnon on bass and vocals; Seattle’s Nick Hornbuckle on 5-string banjo; and Spokane, Wash., resident Greg Spatz on fiddle.
Their appearance is part of a tour promoting the release of a new CD by the group, which will be available the evening of the concert.
A CD recorded by two members of the Eastern Oregon University Fiddle Ensemble, Jesse Jones and Isaac Callender, will be available at the concert as well.
