Friday deadline for next week

Because of the upcoming Thankgiving holiday, the deadline for submission of news and advertising for next week’s Chieftain will be 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 (tomorrow).

The early deadline comes because production day will be moved up to Monday, so the Chieftain can be mailed Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Jo-Hi play opens tonight

The Joseph High School production of the play “Blithe Spirit” will open for a three-day run on Thursday, Nov. 21 (today) at 7 p.m., followed by performances at the same time on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-23.

Admission is $4 per person or $12 per family, with pie and coffee offered during intermission for $1.

All Wallowa County students are invited to attend Thursday evening’s performance free of charge.

RR group meets today in Elgin

The Friends of the Joseph Branch, a support group for the Joseph-Elgin shortline railroad, will meet Thursday, Nov. 21 (today), at 6:30 p.m. at Elgin City Hall. The agenda for the meeting will be continuing discussion and planning for the excursion train project, and an up date from the Wallowa Union Railroad Authority.

The board of the railroad group will meet at 5:30 p.m. prior to the main Friends of the Joseph Branch meeting.

UMC schedules market, concert

The Joseph United Methodist Church will host its second annual Methodist Market 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23. The event will provide lots of opportunity to shop for holiday gifts, decorations, baked goods and bazaar items.

The market will be followed by the Singing Potato Dinner from 5-6:30 p.m. when baked potatoes with all the trimmings will be the main dish. At 7 p.m. everyone is invited to listen to a concert of the combined choirs of the Joseph UMC and the Lostine Methodist Church.

Safe Harbors plans discussion

As part of 18 days of activisim for Men for Violence Prevention, Safe Harbors will be holding a wine and cheese soiree for a round table discussion about domestic and sexual violence at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, at Fishtrap’s Coffin House, 400 E. Grant St., in Enterprise. Adults 21 and older are invited to attend.

Transportation offered to dinner

Free transportation is offered this year to anyone who needs a ride to the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner, which will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day next week at the Community Connection center in Enterprise.

The dinner is once again being hosted by county volunteers, and everyone is invited. The main dishes are provided, and while not necessary, contributions of desserts and salads or canned food for the Wallowa County Food Bank are appreciated.

Enterprise to light up for holidays

The Enterprise Merchants Association invites the community to a Christmas lighting ceremony, Sunday, Dec. 1, at 1p.m. All those who wish to attend are asked to meet at the Enterprise Flower Shop. After lighting up the downtown area, the merchants will also be providing a free chili feed with hot cocoa and coffee in the basement of the Enterprise Community Church.

Abraham salon slated at Joseph Methodist Church

An Abraham salon will be held at the United Methodist Church in Joseph on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. starting Nov. 20 and Nov. 24 respectively.

These salons are part of a national series of conversations focused upon the figure of Abraham, who is an ancestral figure to Jews, Christians and Muslims alike, based on Bruce Feiler’s recent book “Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths.” The local moderator will be Craig Strobel, who holds a Ph.D in comparative study of religions and performance studies from the Graduate Theological Union. If there is interest, Dr. Strobel is planning to offer follow-up classes on Islam.

Art show at Back Fence now open

A special watercolor art show which opened earlier this month at The Back Fence in Enterprise will rune through December.

The artists, many of whom are first time exhibitors, include Dee Duncan, Linda Graning, Dick Clover, Bill Reynolds, Myrna Hayes, Sue Sudman, Vickie Witherrite, Gwen Storer, Rina Wishart and Mary Granger.
