Hileman benefit planned Sunday

A talent show and pie auction will be held as a benefit for Mischelle Hileman of Wallowa at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Wallowa Senior Center.

All proceeds from the auction and donations will go to Hileman, who remains hospitalized in Boise after surviving over a week of exposure in near-zero temperatures in the rugged country northeast of Wallowa.

An account has also been opened at Community Bank for anyone who wishes to donate money to help Mischelle Hileman defray medical expenses.

Call 426-0055 to bid in auction

The 15th annual Wallowa County 4-H Radio Auction will be held over KWVR radio airwaves from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 16. Over 300 items have been donated to the auction.

People must receive a bid number by calling the Wallowa County Extension office, 426-3143, or calling 426-4097 the day of the auction.

The number to call Saturday to place a bid is 426-0055. A total of nine lines will be set up with this number during auction time, manned by 4-H volunteers set up at Cloverleaf Hall.

The radio auction is the main fund-raising event each year for the local 4-H program, which involves over 300 county youngsters. In past years, the auction has raised as much as $9,360.

Tree to stop for visit here

A ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at the courthouse gazebo in Enterprise to welcome the Nation’s Christmas Tree, a 70-foot Douglas fir from the Umpqua National Forest in southwestern Oregon which will be on its way to Washington, D.C.

The Oregon tree will be set up on the west lawn of the White House during the Christmas season and decorated with ornaments from all over the state. Wallowa County has contributed 200 hand-crafted decorations for the big tree and 60 smaller trees from Oregon that will be displayed in Washington, D.C., offices during the upcoming holiday season.

The trees will be accompanied by an entourage of 30 people, including a student choir from Umpqua Community College which will entertain during the Sunday morning ceremony.

Skating rink workday set

An ice skating rink construction workday has been scheduled by the Enterprise Hometown Improvement Group Saturday, Nov. 16, at Enterprise City Park. Volunteers are invited to meet at the park starting at 10 a.m., with help welcome throughout the day. Cordless drills, other carpentry tools and used carpet for protection around the ring will all be useful.

Handcrafters’ Guild bazaar coming up

The Wallowa County Handcrafters’ Guild will hold their annual Christmas bazaar Fri., Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cloverleaf Hall in Enterprise.

This annual event, which is the longest running and largest event of its type in Wallowa County, will feature over 30 crafters selling only hand crafted item. Lunch will be served both Friday and Saturday, and dinner will be available on Friday only. Santa will be available for photos at the cost of $1 each.

Those who bring donations for the local food bank will be rewarded with a handcrafted ornament.

Chamber to meet

Friends of Wallowa Lake Chamber Music will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at the Coffin House, 400 E. Grant St., Enterprise.

Anyone who would like to become a member of the chamber music supporter group or to discuss the Wallowa Lake Chamber Music Festival is encouraged to attend.

Quilters’ guild to meet Nov. 14

The Wallowa Mountain Quilters’ Guild meeting will be held Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at St. Katherine’s Catholic Church parish hall. Activities will include block-of-the-month, the next installment of the mystery quilt, discussion of upcoming classes and show-and-tell. All are welcome.

SBDC offers workshop, free business advice

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be offering a workshop entitled “Financing Your Small Business” on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 6-8 p.m., at the Best Western Rama Inn in Enterprise. The cost is $10.

The two hour seminar will cover budgeting for the small business owner, determining your true financing needs, the five “C’s” of credit, preparing for your visit with your banker, and creative financing alternatives.

Also, Greg Smith of the SBDC will be in Enterprise at the EOU Distance Education office, 121 W. Main on Thursday, Nov. 14. Enterprise FFA fall potluck to be held next Tuesday

Everyone is invited to attend the Enterprise FFA Chapter’s annual fall potluck Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the EHS multipurpose room.

In addition to good food, there will be the traditional creed speaking contest and a presentation regarding the groups national convention trip.

Those with last names starting with A through H are asked to bring a salad, I through R a main dish and S through Z a dessert.

Joseph, Enterprise holding 4-H sign-ups

Sign-up nights for 4-H in Wallowa County are being held this week and next. The sign-up night in Wallowa was held Wednesday (yesterday) in the Beth Johnson Room.

Joseph’s sign-up night is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Thursday (today) in the JHS library. Enterprise’s 4-H sign-up will be held Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Cloverleaf Hall, beginning as well at 7 p.m.
