The VFW Post #4307 and VFW Ladies Auxiliary are inviting all Wallowa County high school students in grades 9-12 to compete in the 56th annual audio essay Voice of Democracy competition.
Interested students need only write and then record a three- to five-minute essay while expressing their views of the patriotic theme, “Freedom’s Obligation.” The deadline to enter is Friday, Nov. 1.
Local student winners advance to district competition, and then may be eligible for state and national competition. Winners win scholarships at the local level, and a local student could end up earning a trip to Washington, D.C., and a $25,000 as a national winner. A total of $141,500 in national scholarships are awarded to finalists.
Last year a local winner, Tara Phinney of Providence Academy, qualified to compete at the state level. All local high school students in public or private schools, or home schooled, are eligible to enter the Voice of Democracy competition. Call 426-8229 for more information.
According to VFW Post #4307 Commander Larry Kessler students gain more than just scholarship money by taking part in Voice of Democracy. He points to increased self-confidence and poise, experience in polishing communication skills and the opportunity for self expression, as well as a four-day tour of Washington D.C. for students who are their state’s first place winner.
“Young people who participate in the competition benefit by gaining a better understanding of their country, their freedoms and their obligations to America,” said Commander Kessler.
