Oct. 3, 1902
IMNAHA – One or two smallpox cases in this neighborhood, and nearly everyone is taking precautions in the form of cream of tartar.
Miller Bros. and Pete Beaudan, of Joseph, last week sold to Lee Bros., agents for Mr. Watz, of Southern California, 8,000 head of sheep and have delivered the same at North Powder.
Manny Howard, the notorious stock rustler of Baker county, was again sentenced to the penitentiary by Judge Eakin in the circuit court. This time he got five years.
Married in this city Monday, Sept. 29, 1902, Mr. Fritz Ott and Nina Johnson, Rev. Samms officiating.
JOSEPH – Enterprise got the Ott wedding, but Joseph got the Ott charivari.

Oct. 6, 1932
In a stirring address by Rep. R.R. Butler at the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce meeting Tuesday night, he called the creation of the Reconstruction Finance Corp. the most important legislative act in the history of the country.
JOSEPH – So much wood is being hauled into Joseph this fall that one thinks it cannot be used up in a year. … Among the commercial wood dealers, the Daggett boys, Max Mink and Roy Hyman bring in the most.
Two road jobs are now underway in the hills, using funds obtained a dozen years ago from the sale of road bonds. The county will get about twice as much work for the money as when the bond sold. A man now works with four horses for $5 a day, compared to $10 a day ten years ago.
Wallowa County may borrow $16,710 of federal funds this winter for relief of the unemployed this winter. It is the belief of the county court that many persons will be in need, and the responsibility of providing for them will fall to the county.

A 24 percent increase in registered voters in Wallowa County over 1948 was reported in figures released this week by county clerk Marjorie Martin. With two more days to register before the Nov. 4, election, The figures show 1,968 registered Republicans and 2.336 registered Demos.
Wallowa County Stockgrowers announce that the Craig brothers, Enterprise Hereford raisers, have been chosen to represent Wallowa County in the state Cattlemen of the Year contest for 1952.
Hubert Murrill, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Murrill, Flora, was the champion tractor driver at the first 4-H tractor driving contest ever held at the county fair. Dallas McCrae was two points behind the winner.
EDITORIAL – We will no doubt be accused of being alarmists and meddling reformers, but we concur in the view that it is time some serious thinking is done about the attitude and conduct of teen age boys and girls in this community. … We are shocked at the disrespect of children toward parents, teachers, police and elders in general. We are shocked at the reports of drinking which come from all corners.

Roland W. Johnson, a former resident of Wallowa County, has opened a general practice law office in the Coleman Chrisman building on Main St. in Wallowa.
Hurricane Creek Lumber Company’s new mill near Joseph is shaping up, and manager Paul Tull says he hopes it will start running the latter part of this month. A crew is already being hired to run two shifts in the quad band mill.
Watercolor landscapes and still life paintings by Wallowa County artist Eve Slinker will be on display during October at the Crossroads Art Center in Baker. “I consider myself a student and amateur artist,” she remarked. “I want to increase my skill and someday complete an art major in college.”

Two 16-year-olds from the John Day area escaped serious injury this week when they fell from a rock while scaling down a 75 ft. cliff at the Boys Scout Camp south of Wallowa Lake.
As the 101st U.S. Congressional session draws to a close, one piece of legislation that is expected to be passed is one that will clear the way to add 14 sites from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana to the Nez Perce National Historical Park.
With all but one school district reporting gains, and the number of home schooled students (39) increasing dramatically, the total student population of the county jumped by 55 students from last year at this time (to 1,560).
ARTS/ Dave Manuel of Joseph was recently named official sculptor for the Oregon Trail Celebration and is currently working on a three-piece sculpture, titled “Promise Land,” depicting a pioneer family on the Oregon Trail.
